McCutcheon ‘thrilled’ with shows’ success

From DigitalSpy

Martine McCutcheon has revealed that she is “thrilled” with the success of ITV1’s sister shows Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach.

The actress, who plays both Susan Penwarden and a neurotic version of herself, said bosses were more than happy with the programmes’ ratings.

She said: “I’m really thrilled and I know that ITV are really happy with it. Apparently they’re really happy with the audience that they’ve reached, which is a younger audience. I think they’re just waiting for it to go from strength to strength, hopefully.”

Speaking at the South Bank Show Awards, McCutcheon added that constructive criticism was appreciated, although she insisted that she had not read any reviews herself.

The 31-year-old said: “There’s always something that you can enhance on. There’s always something that you can do to make a show better and I’m sure the producers and ITV will take on board any relevant comments and make it work.”

She added that she is looking forward to shooting more scenes for soap Echo Beach, saying: “We just all want to film together again because we absolutely genuinely got on like a house on fire in Cornwall. I don’t think it’s ever been the same since we left.”

McCutcheon recently signed to front a week-long show dedicated to beauty and anti-aging.

McCutcheon to present beauty show

From DigitalSpy

Martine McCutcheon is to front a week-long show dedicated to beauty and anti-aging.

The Echo Beach star will be joined by celebrity friends and women trying out the latest beauty treatments at an exclusive location in London.

Each episode of The Truth About Beauty will investigate a non-invasive way of combating the signs of aging, while four women will undergo a six-week challenge to look younger through diet and exercise in a segment called ‘Turn Back The Clock’.

The show will also see four women go under the knife in a bid to regain their looks, as well as look at women who have been voted ‘Icons of Aging’.

McCutcheon will visit Paris in search of beautiful women of all ages for another segment.

She said: “I’m really excited about this series. Like most girls I’m always reading about the latest lotions and potions and I’m looking forward to really getting under the skin of the beauty industry, to find out what actually works and what’s a waste of time and money.”

The programme, a collaboration between UKTV Style and Glamour magazine, is scheduled to begin filming in March.

It will premiere on UKTV Style next May.

McCutcheon hits out at ‘brutal’ Hollywood

By Beth Hilton, Entertainment reporter

Martine McCutcheon has criticised the “brutal” nature of the Hollywood film industry.

The actress moved to the US in a bid for movie stardom after appearing in hit romantic comedy Love Actually in 2003.

However, despite winning a Best Transatlantic Breakthrough gong at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards, her dreams failed to materialise and she returned to the UK.

She told Closer: “Los Angeles is just brutal. Even Cameron Diaz is old hat. Once you do three movies, you’re over. I can see why people like Kate Winslet have said they like spending time in the UK - Los Angeles just isn’t the real world.”

She added: “Even though moving there wasn’t a godsend for my career, I got the chance to take stock - I grew up a lot in that year.”

The 31-year-old is currently starring in ITV1 sister shows Echo Beach and Moving Wallpaper.

ECHO BEACH on Thursday 10 January 2008

ITV is proud to announce two interlinking shows. Jason Donovan and Martine McCutcheon return to their soap roots to play the parts of ex-lovers in Echo Beach. Ben Miller plays the hapless producer desperate to make the soap a success in a behind-the-scenes comedy Moving Wallpaper. Both 12-part series will run together on ITV1.

In Echo Beach, Hugo Speer plays Mark Penwarden, who will stop at nothing to run his wife Susan’s [McCutcheon] ex-lover Daniel Marrack [Donovan] out of Polnarren. The cast also includes Johnny Briggs, Ed Speleers, Marcus Patrick, Laura Greenwood, Christian Cooke, Jonathan Readwin, Naomi Ryan, Chandeep Uppal and newcomer Hannah Lederer-Alton. Moving Wallpaper’s Ben Miller is joined by Raquel Cassidy, James Lance, Sarah Hadland, Elizabeth Berrington, Lucy Liemann, Dave Lamb and Sinead Keenan. Susie Amy appears in both shows.

Episode One

Daniel Marrack returns to the Cornish surfing town of Polnarren after a twenty year absence having bought a run down building on Echo Beach which he is turning into a new surf shop and cafe. His son, Brae, a super fit surfer, is determined to make the most of their new business venture. Dan’s daughter, Abi, who initially decided she wanted to stay in London has also been drawn towards a new life by the sea. Having recently lost their mother, Dan is determined that Brae and Abi should have a fresh start and a better life.

But the Marracks’ return does not go down well in Polnarren as old rivalries are re-ignited. Mark, Dan’s old business partner, is outraged that Dan has the audacity to come back to Polnarren after having once had an affair with his wife, Susan. Susan still has feelings for him but she also has her own reasons for not wanting to be reminded of the past. She urges Dan to leave Polnarren for good.

Love film première seduces fans

Some of the UK’s biggest screen stars turned out for the British première of romantic comedy Love Actually in London on Sunday.

Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson - who are in the film - were among those on the red carpet.

The film is the first to be directed by Richard Curtis, who wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill.

A crowd of several thousand were at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square, some waiting more than five hours.

The première, also attended by Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon and Bill Nighy, was raising money for the Comic Relief charity.

The film will be released across the UK on Friday and combines 10 separate stories - all connected by the theme of love.

Grant plays the UK prime minister, who falls for his tea lady, played by former EastEnders actress McCutcheon.

Grant revealed that he asked Curtis to make changes to his lines because he was becoming tired of playing nice men.

He had “a few little notes” for Richard after reading the script, he told BBC News Online.

“Although I thought it was a superb script, I was a little nervous to go back to being Mr Nice Guy. I’ve quite enjoyed being less nice in Bridget Jones and About a Boy.”

But he added that Curtis was “by far and away the best comedy writer I know and it’s always going to be difficult to turn down a Richard script”.

Curtis stated his desire to work with Grant again, saying: “I know he’s not a nice guy and if I use him again I’ll try to be closer to his real character.”

Curtis, who was made a CBE in 2000, wrote the scripts for films including Bridget Jones’s Diary and The Tall Guy as well as Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

He refused to say whether he would direct again, but told reporters his next film was still some way off.

“It will take the usual three years before I get around to it again,” he said.

Love Actually took almost $16m (£9.5m) in its first two weekends on release in the United States and Canada, but has received mixed reviews from critics.

Curtis said: “I’d rather make a film that most of the audience liked and some critics didn’t rather than a film that critics loved and nobody wanted to watch.”

Some of the cast also rounded on reviewers, with Rickman calling the press “cynical” and Nighy saying he refused to read the write-ups.

“I know about the movie and I know about the figures in America and I know what the American public think - the few individuals that write for the newspapers, I’ve no idea,” Nighy said.

Nighy plays an ageing rock star in the film - and is hotly tipped to have the UK Christmas number one single in real life with a song featured in the film.

The track, Christmas is All Around, was “Godawful”, he said - but urged people to buy it because money went to Comic Relief.

The prospect of being Christmas number one was “complete lunacy”, he said, adding: “I don’t think I’m ever going to be a rock star.”

Keira Knightley’s part in the film completed a year in which she has become one of Hollywood’s hottest properties after starring opposite Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.

“The last 12 months have been completely crazy - I’ve been really lucky because the work I’ve been involved with has been really special, I think,” she told BBC News Online.

“The opportunity to work with Richard Curtis was incredible - I’ve been such a huge fan of his and the idea of being in his directorial debut was something that absolutely couldn’t be missed.”

She also revealed that she had not crossed paths with many other cast members until Sunday because they all filmed separate “films within a film”.

“This is the first time we’ve all been together I think, and having my picture taken with Hugh Grant - that was the longest time I’ve ever spent with him and it was rather fabulous,” she said.
